March 1943
The Guadalcanal campaign — fought from August 1942 through February 1943 — was the first major Allied offensive in the Pacific and a decisive turning point in World War II. Six months of grinding naval, air, and ground combat in the Solomons ended when Japanese forces completed their evacuation of the island on 7 February 1943, conceding control to American forces. The campaign cost both sides heavily in ships and men; the waters around Guadalcanal became known as “Ironbottom Sound” for the warships sunk there.
These six scanned pages from a March 1943 article document the campaign shortly after its conclusion. Pages 6–44 were not digitized.
