Wahoo Running Japanese Gunning

Ammunition Magazine — March 1943

This two-page article from the March 1943 issue of Ammunition — the US Navy's internal magazine for enlisted personnel — covers USS Wahoo (SS-238) and her record-setting patrol against Japanese shipping. Under Commander Dudley W. "Mush" Morton, Wahoo became one of the most aggressive and celebrated submarines of World War II. On her third war patrol in January 1943, Wahoo sank four ships in a single day in the Yellow Sea, including troop transports, and returned to Pearl Harbor flying a broom from her periscope shears to signal a clean sweep. The article captures the spirit of the early submarine offensive against Japan at a time when American sub commanders were developing the aggressive patrol tactics that would ultimately strangle Japanese supply lines. Morton and Wahoo were lost on their seventh patrol in October 1943 in the Sea of Japan.
