8-Inch 3-Gun Turrets — Main Armament for USS Salem-Class Cruisers
OP-1180 title page — 8-Inch 3-Gun Turrets, Main Armament for USS Salem Class, Turret Description and Operation, with 1968 declassification stamp

Ordnance Pamphlet 1180 (Volume 1) is the Bureau of Ordnance manual for the rotating 8-inch, 3-gun turrets that form the main armament of USS Salem-class heavy cruisers. It describes and provides operating and maintenance instructions for the turret of the rapid-fire, automatic 8-inch guns — turrets of an entirely new design, operating three times faster than the 3-gun turrets of the earlier Baltimore class — and includes appended general engineering data and Safety Precautions applying to the guns and to all other turret installations.

Volume 1 covers turret structural assembly, ordnance and auxiliary installations, and turret operation from casting loose and firing through gun casualty procedures, securing, and stowing ammunition. It is one of a series of six volumes describing the turret, turret operation, and all of the turret installations; the companion volumes — Guns and Slides (Vol. 2), Elevating and Training Gear Drives and Controls (Vol. 3), Ammunition Stowage and Hoist Equipment (Vol. 4), Turret Fire Control and Electrical Installations (Vol. 5), and Tools, Accessories, and General Instructions for Turret Installations (Vol. 6) — are not included here. This publication was originally RESTRICTED and was declassified 30 October 1968.
