Flying Shark Squadron

All Hands Magazine — August 1942

The August 1942 issue of the Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin appeared as American naval aviation was fighting to hold the Pacific at Coral Sea, Midway, and the opening of the Guadalcanal campaign. This brief feature profiles the Flying Shark Squadron, one of the Navy’s carrier-based units flying combat missions in the Pacific theater during the critical early months of the war, when experienced aviators and proven aircraft types were still in short supply and every engagement against a veteran Japanese naval air arm came at a steep cost.
