Japan seized the Aleutian Islands of Attu and Kiska in June 1942 — the only American soil occupied by a foreign enemy during World War II. U.S. and Canadian air and naval forces immediately began a sustained campaign of bombing and interdiction to neutralize the garrison and prevent resupply. This January 1943 Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin — the publication later renamed All Hands — published the first detailed public account of those bombing raids against Japanese positions on Kiska, describing the missions and the enemy defenses encountered.
