NAVPERS 10111, First Edition 1965, is the official Navy training manual covering the complete 5-inch/38-caliber gun system as installed aboard scores of U.S. Navy vessels. The 5″/38 was the standard dual-purpose gun—effective against both surface targets and aircraft—deployed on destroyers, cruisers, battleships, and carriers from the late 1930s through the Cold War era, making it the most widely produced naval gun in American history.
The manual is organized in three sections. Section A covers the 5″/38 Gun Mount, Mk 30 in nineteen chapters: general introduction, gun assemblies, breech and firing mechanisms, recoil and counterrecoil systems, mount assemblies, stand and carriage assembly, sights, and foot firing and firing stop mechanisms, followed by complete disassembly and assembly procedures for each major group and closing chapters on routine maintenance (in two parts) and operational casualties. Section B covers the 5″/38 mount rammer, Northern Pump Company type, in two chapters: introduction and theory of operation. Section C covers the 5″/38 Projectile Hoist, Mk 2 in eight chapters: valve block and control unit removal, disassembly, reassembly, replacement, and adjustment, plus overall adjustments (in two parts) and maintenance.
This copy is complete: all twenty-nine chapters in two parts, over 500 scanned pages.
