The USS Truxtun (DDG-103) is part of the Arleigh Burke class of guided-missile destroyers. The Arleigh Burke class is built around the Aegis combat system and the SPY-1D multi-function phased-array radar. These ships are the U.S. Navy’s only active destroyers and are among the largest and most powerful destroyers ever built — both larger and more heavily armed than many previous cruisers.
“Good discipline is considered by all who know anything of service as the vital part of a ship at war.” — Captain Thomas Truxtun
I took these photos on April 20, 2009, when the destroyer USS Truxtun visited Charleston, SC for her commissioning. The slide show that originally appeared here was lost when Google stopped hosting it — these 66 photos are the restored set, now hosted here on our own site. Click any photo to enlarge it.
The father of the Aegis system, Retired Rear Admiral Wayne E. Meyer, passed away September 1, 2009. For additional information, visit the USS Truxtun’s official website.
