Birthday and Book

USS Brinkley Bass DD-887 underway — Gearing-class destroyer on which Gene Slover served

Gene Slover served aboard USS Brinkley Bass DD-887.

Today we celebrate the birth of our nation and also the birth of a great American, Harry Brinkley Bass, born July 4, 1916!

This is a day we celebrate the birth of our nation — one Nation Under God — and a day we remember those who served our country and are serving our country to protect our individual and collective freedoms. This is a day in which our country comes together to make a statement: We will never forget. What a great day, and what a great historical fact, that it is the birthday of Brinkley Bass!

One great way we have to make certain that great men are not forgotten is through great books. A complete biography of Brinkley Bass was published October 1, 2010. The 336-page book, with 71 color photographs, provides details and insight into the short life of this great American.

The author of this book, Trailing a Texas Eagle, is Glenn Cummings. Glenn joined the Association Reunion in Branson and provided background details, including his recent interviews with still-living fighter pilot squadron mates, Brink’s Naval Academy classmates, and Brink’s relatives.

Brinkley Bass’s mother and father used to come to the ship each year while in port at San Diego, California.

We will indeed NEVER FORGET!

Very respectfully,
