They Return to Fight

All Hands Magazine — August 1945

In the final months of the Pacific War, the Navy worked constantly to return damaged ships and recovered personnel to active duty. The Bureau of Naval Personnel’s All Hands Bulletin for August 1945 featured “They Return to Fight,” an account of naval personnel — likely including carrier aircrew who had survived combat, rescue, or extended recovery — rejoining the fleet for the campaigns ahead. Published in the same month Japan announced its surrender, the article reflects both the intensity of the war effort at its peak and the determination of American sailors and aviators to see the Pacific War through to the end.
