On 12 February 2015 I had the honor and privilege of accompanying Medal of Honor recipient Maj. General James E. Livingston (USMC Ret.) on a visit to the Naval Health Clinic Joint Base Charleston in Goose Creek, SC. The General was welcomed by Captain Marvin Jones, the C.O., and was briefed by staff members regarding the facility and patients. Afterward, he addressed staff and patients in the atrium.
The Capt. John G. Feder ambulatory care clinic is a beautiful 188,000 square foot facility with skilled staff and state of the art equipment. The facility is shared by the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and serves active duty personnel, retirees and their families. Services include Medical Home/Family Care, Physical Therapy, Optometry, MRI, Digital CT, X-Ray, Ultrasound and Mammography.
In today’s world, where many V.A. Hospitals across the country have troublesome reputations, the Charleston SC area is fortunate to have the Ralph H. Johnson V.A. Hospital — named for a Medal of Honor recipient — and this outpatient facility. Our local papers have frequent editorials praising the V.A. hospital for its care. The main complaint is very difficult parking due to its downtown location. The Navy Health Clinic has over 600 parking spaces, so that is an additional welcome benefit, along with the drive-through pharmacy.
