The USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-58 on July 30, 1945, and sank in twelve minutes. Of the 1,195 men aboard, only 316 survived — many lost to shark attacks and exposure while awaiting rescue in open water for nearly five days. Captain Charles McVay III was subsequently court-martialed for hazarding his ship by failing to zigzag. This April 1946 article reports the remission of his sentence by the Secretary of the Navy.
