Published in the May 1969 issue of All Hands, this feature marks the return of USS Enterprise (CVN-65) to active service following the devastating fire of 14 January 1969. While conducting flight operations southwest of Pearl Harbor, an accidental ignition of a Zuni rocket set off a chain of explosions and fires that killed 27 men, injured 314 more, and destroyed 15 aircraft. After months of intensive repairs at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, the Navy’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier was back in service and returned to combat operations in the Western Pacific.
