Armor

These photographs document examples of face-hardened naval armor plate, showing the construction and installation methods used to secure heavy plate to a warship’s hull. The first two images show armor sections with bolt holes and mounting hardware exposed; the large threaded fasteners visible in the plates are the armor bolts that anchored each section to the ship’s framing. The third image depicts gun port armor fabricated for the Imperial Russian battleship Peresviet, a Peresvet-class pre-dreadnought battleship of the late 1890s.
