This chapter covers the design, components, and operation of naval gun turrets as used aboard United States Navy battleships and cruisers. Pages 97–130 address turret structure and nomenclature, the rotating and stationary elements of the turret assembly, the barbette, the turret officer's booth, training and elevating mechanisms, and the powder and projectile handling systems from the magazines up through the gun house. Detailed diagrams illustrate the arrangement of the upper and lower projectile flats, shell hoists, powder hoists, and the electrical and hydraulic systems that drive them. This section of the manual was the standard reference for turret crews and ordnance officers during World War II.
